Alien Periodic Table of Elements

Abstract

For this activity, students are to identify mysterious elements that were found on Planet X that have similar properties and characteristics to the elements found on earth.  Once students match the alien elements to the earth elements, students are to follow the earth’s periodic table of elements to organize the same manner.

  • identify melting and freezing points of elements
  • identify the number the proton, neutron, and electron of elements
  • identify characteristics and properties of given elements

Outcomes

Student will be able to understand the manner in which the periodic table was arranged and why.  They will also be able to use the periodic table of elements to answer given questions.  Students could use the information that they gain to identify compounds and balancing equations.

Bloom’s Taxonomy

Level Activities
Remembering Recall the groups and family of the Periodic Table of Elements
Understanding  Explain why the Alien element corresponds with the earth’s elements
Applying Use information that was found about the Alien Element and determine which earth element it matches up to
Analyzing Relate the information that was research to the Earth’s Periodic table and organize them in the same manner
Evaluating Justify why the table is a reasonable way to organize the elements
Creating Create the poster

Multiple Intelligences

Intelligence
Verbal/Linguistic
  • what needs to be completed throughout the lesson
  • comprehend what the directions are by listening to oral directions
  • following directions that are in the textbook and other written material
Logical-Mathematical
  • ordering the elements according to their atomic number
  • identify the number of electron, protons and neutrons

Musical      n/a
Bodily-Kinesthetic      n/a
Spatial
  •  correctly filling in the elements into the complete chart
Interpersonal
  • Working in as a partner
  • Speaking to others about their results (comparing and contrasting the findings)
  • Participating in class discussions
  • To recognize moods and feelings of others through the lesson
Intrapersonal
  • Working in as a partner
  • Speaking to others about their results (comparing and contrasting the findings)
  • Participating in class discussions
  • To recognize moods and feelings of others through the lesson

Mind Styles

Concrete Sequential Student will benefit from direct instruction both verbal and written.   They will also check their work as the progress through the lesson. They will follow the procedures in a linear manner.  They will also benefit from the movement through out the classroom.
Concrete Random Student will benefit from the freedom of investigating on the computer independently.   They will be comfortable coming up with their own table, graph and equation.
Abstract Random Student will enjoying working with a partner, listening to the class report and focusing on the task
Abstract Sequential Student will apply the knowledge of the skill to complete the assignment.  They use logic  to find the solution and create the table.

Sense and Meaning

Sense is when the students recall their prior knowledge of elements.  It helps the students to “use it or lose it”.  If the class revisits frequently, the skill will not be lost. This allows time for reprocessing.   It may even be gained because students are not always ready to learn the skills at the same time.   This will take place through webquest and completing the poster.Meaning for the students would be when they determine which of the elements are used in their lives and how they are organized on the table.

 Chunking Methods

Chunking the information is a useful method for this lesson.  Students will bring the information that they researched under their job title and bring it to the group when they create the poster.  The students also can chunk the information found on the periodic table of elements (i.e. groups/families) to determine common properties and similarities of Planet X elements.

Additional Requirement

 Complete textbook pages 99-105

Standards Addressed

5.2.8.A.1; Explain that all matter is made of atoms, and give examples of common elements.

5.2.8.A.4; Predict the physical and chemical properties of elements based on their positions on the Periodic Table.

5.2.8.A.5: Identify unknown substances based on data regarding their physical and chemical properties.

5.2.8.A.6; Determine whether a substance is a metal or nonmetal through student-designed investigations.
